Unstoppable Energy

Winter is over at last, so put a spring in your step with these energy boosting tips from PureGym fitness expert Justin Way.

1. Don’t skip breakfast. The word breakfast literally means "to break a fast," and your body can’t shift into full gear when it hasn’t had fuel.

2. Move daily. You can go to the gym, go hiking, go biking,  go for a walk, or jog. Move more, and you will find you have more energy.

3. Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Snack throughout the day. By eating smaller but more frequent “meals”, you will maintain a steady dose of energy instead of experiencing energy drops.  Don’t snack on fatty and sugar laden junk food though.

4. Try a new tact. Spring is a great time to get rid of bad exercise habits and start new ones. For example, put the scale away for a while and instead focus on how your clothes fit and how you feel.

5. Drink lots of water. Dehydration is a sinister cause of fatigue because it slowly creeps up on you. If you consistently drink less than eight cups of water a day, you may be sluggish all the time.

6. Exercise in the AM. Try doing your workout in the morning instead of after work to get an energy boost that lasts all day. Sure, you’ll have to wake up an hour or two earlier, but you get that time back at night.

7. Join a gym. Being around other committed fitness enthusiasts will support you in your efforts. A great fitness club also offers certified trainers who can give you the personal attention, a program and the motivation you might need after a long, lazy winter.

8. Eat lots of berries. Especially berries that are blue, red, or purple. The colour comes from anthocyanins, a powerful antioxidant, that boosts energy - all berries contain tons.

9. Take a walk outside. Getting outside for some fresh air, a change of scenery, and a quick walk to get your blood going will do wonders for your mood and motivation. Seeing the sun is a signal to your body that it’s not bedtime yet, so you feel instantly more alert and energetic.

10. Get enough sleep. It’s no surprise that energy starts with a good night’s sleep.  Adults need eight to nine hours a night to restore and regenerate their minds and bodies.
