Top tips for gym newbies

By Matt Wolstenholme

As a personal trainer I realise how daunting it can be for a gym newbie. Here are my top tips to get the most out of your membership.

1) Book an induction. You wouldn’t walk into a factory and start messing about with the equipment without any training right? Be open to learning new things.

2) Don't be afraid to ask. If you don't know how to use a piece of equipment or are unsure about an exercise, ask a member of gym staff. It's what they're there for.

World record!

By Matt Wolstenholme

Since my last blog I am hugely proud to say I have become a freestyle football world record holder!

I established the benchmark for ‘longest distance juggling a football’ by keeping the ball in the air without using my hands for 20 kilometres – 50 laps around the athletics track at London’s Harrow School.

Why personal training is worth the cost

By Matt Wolstenholme

The other week I was watching TV reruns on Dave and on popped Dragon's Den, one of my favourite shows.

For those who’ve never seen the programme, it involves people pitching business ideas to rich investors.

Out strode this guy, whose idea was a chair that, according to him, helps people lose weight. All you have to do to fight the flab is sit in it.

What a load of absolute tosh. He even had a 'gym' full of the things.

Reclaim the gym!

By Matt Wolstenholme

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrunt! We’ve all heard them down the gym, the men making frankly unspeakable noises while lifting weights.

Once my ears were pounded by one guy taking it to a whole new level - he actually continued grunting for a good two minutes after he had finished lifting.

The forgotten fitness: Mental health

By Matt Wolstenholme

I was excited to receive an email from YMCAfit industry training about a new course called ‘Exercise and Mental Health’ recently.

This is a vastly important area all too often ignored in the fitness industry.

TV shows not fit for purpose

By Matt Wolstenholme

On a rare night off from work I curled up on the sofa with my wife to watch The Fat Fighters and The Biggest Loser.

Both programmes made me feel like throwing a dumbbell at the telly.

Our evening’s viewing started with The Fat Fighters on Channel 4. The premise of the show was to follow four ‘extraordinary’ personal trainers as they went about their work.
