I have been an avid rider but after a brief period of being out of the saddle I no longer have the temptation to get back on the bike, especially with the weather at the moment I don't want to go out in the cold!
What gets you lot back in the saddle after a long period off the bike?

At this time of year I aim for a charity sportive. I'm attempting the 112 mile Fred Whitton Challenge.
It ensures I plan my months, as there's no way I can cram in panic training two weeks before.
Cross training helps to keep me active, and set me up well for longer rides when the weather warms up.
Turbo trainer (watch a film, read a book, etc), pilates, strength work at the gym, off road running, anything to keep me active, that relates well to on the bike.
Keeping busy means the momentum means the motivation is (Usually!) easier.

Hi It's hard to pull Anwen
Hi
It's hard to pull Anwen (my bike) out of the cellar sometimes - especially as she's a time trial bike and she doesn't like the cold weather (brrrr!). So I keep her entertained in the cellar with short (30-40min) rides to keep her ticking over with the odd longer ride watching a movie. She likes that.
The best bit is when I tell her all about the races i'm going to book up for the summer. That gets her motivated and we put a plan together that will get us race fit. The turbo sessions keep us going until the weather isn't too slippy (she doesn't mind a bit of rain - she's Welsh you see), and that first ride out might feel pretty cold, but once we're on the road nice and early it feels great. Sometimes she just doesn't want to go home, but I remind Anwen that we can go out next weekend and we head off home with a smile; happy that we did those winter rides in the cellar to keep us safe, and happy that our legs don't feel like they are about to fall off...
So, go and say 'Hi' to your bike. Give him/her/it a quick wash and a bit of a service. Get out onto the road if it happens to be ok outside and just enjoy the ride. Don't worry about mileage or how long your out. Just live it for an hour or two and see how you get on.
Trust me. Getting out there again. It's just like riding a bike...

The other guys are right - having an event to aim for is a great way to get motivated. Plus it gets the pounds off :D

Living in London the cost of public transport is what gets me on the bike. It can save me up to £30 a week and that adds up! Plus I find getting around the Capital by bike is by far the fastest way to get around. Also, just losing those extra calories is worth it!
